Water on Street
If you notice water standing on the street for longer than 24 hours after a rain, there may be an issue with the storm drain. Start by clearing the surface of your drain. If the issue persists, place a request for a sewer cleaning with Water Management.
Basement Flooding
Backup in the basement during a heavy rain event can be extremely costly, disruptive, and time-consuming. When backup occurs, it is important to report it to Water Management for an inspection. Typically, an inspector will arrive within 48 hours. Even if the water recedes, Water Management uses data collected through “Water in Basement” complaints to plan larger infrastructure projects.
If an inspector determines there is not an issue with the sewer main, there may be a problem with your private service line, the pipe that connects your home to the main. Some residents may be eligible for assistance. Learn about the City’s private drain repair program.
Lead Water Testing
If you’d like to test your water for lead, Chicago provides two free options.
Technician visit - do not use water six hours prior to appointment
Lead service lines are the primary contributor to lead in drinking water. These pipes connect your home to the water main. In Chicago, lead services lines are most common in single family homes and small buildings built before 1986.
