Replacing a Lead Service Line
Lead service lines are the primary contributor to lead in drinking water. These pipes connect your home to the water main. In Chicago, lead services lines are most common in single family homes and small buildings built before 1986. If you lead service line breaks or leaks, the city will replace it for free. First, determine whether you have a lead service line. Then, call 3-1-1 to report the leak or break.
If your lead service line is not broken, you may still qualify for assistance. Certain income eligible homeowners may receive free replacement through the Equity Replacement Program. Other homeowners may qualify for waived permit fees associated with lead service line replacement. This can save households up to $5,000.
