Utility Assistance

The State of Illinois administers a program called LIHEAP which provides utility assistance (gas and electricity) to low income families. There are application windows for this program and the types of assistance available may vary throughout the year. Because of this, we recommend  residents work with a qualified community organization to complete an application. In the 47th Ward, the South East Asia Center can assist with LIHEAP applications.

If you've fallen behind on your gas or electricity bill, we recommend reaching out directly to your utility provider - likely ComEd or People's Gas - to discuss potential payment plans or debt relief programs. There are firm restrictions on shutting off gas service for nonpayment between December 1st and March 31st.

In Illinois, consumers can choose alternative energy suppliers. Sometimes, companies offer incentives to initially enroll in like lower rates or one time credits. Suppliers may later raise rates beyond what would typically be charged. If your electricity bill is unusually high and you are enrolled with an alternative energy supplier, you can confirm whether cancelling with this supplier will lower your rate.

Finally, CPS families who qualify for free and reduced lunch may also qualify for free wifi through the Chicago Connected program.

Steps

  1. [ONGOING ELECTRIC OR GAS ASSISTANCE] Confirm whether you meet the income requirements for LIHEAP. If you believe you do qualify or have questions, contact the South East Asia Center (773-989-6927) for assistance with an application.

  2. [FELL BEHIND ON BILL] Contact your utility provider to inquire about payment plans options and whether you might qualify for any debt relief programs.

  3. [ALTERNATIVE ELECTRIC SUPPLIERS] Watch this video to find out whether you are enrolled with an alternative electric supplier, whether it is increasing your cost, and for directions on how to cancel.

  4. [INTERNET FOR CPS FAMILIES] Visit CPS' website to confirm whether your family qualifies for free Internet. You will be prompted to enter your student's ID number. Follow the directions on how to enroll.
