Property Tax Exemptions

If you own and live in a home, townhome, or condominium unit for which you pay property taxes, you can apply for an exemption that will lower the assessed value of your property, and more than likely your total property tax bill. Click here for further information about exemptions and links to the required forms.

Completed forms should be sent directly to the Cook County Assessor as indicated on the forms. Our office partners with the County to host property tax appeals workshops.

Senior Property tax Freeze

Qualified senior citizens can apply for a freeze of the assessed value of their property. Over time, in many areas, this program results in taxes changing minimally and often decreasing as surrounding properties continue to rise in assessed value. This is the most valuable homeowner exemption program. The value increases over the years as it eliminates the impact of regular reassessment increases that may occur every three years.

Property Tax Appeals Workshops

The dates for property tax appeals are posted on the Cook County Assessor’s website. Residents can schedule an appointment with the Cook County Assessor’s office directly on their website. Each year, we work with our Cook County Commissioners to host office hours to assist residents with filing their property tax appeals. Find out how to contact your Cook County Commissioner.
